For weeks, I have been unable to log into my YouTube account using the app on my iPhone 3GS.

None of the other suggestions online worked for me, but I did find a solution on my own today. I’m posting it here in the hopes that it will help someone else.

I logged into an old Google account using my PC while I was investigating this issue, and I discovered by accident that I could log in to YouTube with the alternate email address I had listed on that account.

But I didn’t have an alternate email address on my current Google account, so I took the following steps:

Logged into my current Google account and went to My Account (https://www.google.com/accounts/ManageAccount?hl=en).

Under Email Addresses, clicked Edit.

Added an alternate email address (a Hotmail address).

Google sent a verification email, so I went to Hotmail, opened it, and clicked the link to verify.

Then I immediately went to the YouTube app on my iPhone and was able to login using the alternate email address I had just verified and my Google/Gmail password.

Let me know if this works for you. If it does, feel free to post this solution to any forums where you tried to get a solution and none worked. Spread the joy!

This is a post for other iPhone /iPod Touch users who have trouble setting up your email as an account on your device.

Dreamhost DOES have a wiki article on it here: http://wiki.dreamhost.com/IPhone_3G

You can also find it by searching for iPhone at the Dreamhost support wiki. It is not linked from Dreamhost’s Email Configuration page.

Short answer to problems: If you’ve already tried inputting the mailservers, etc., and keep getting “authentication failed” messages, you’re simply supposed to click “Continue” to continue the process. You may have to do this twice. Eventually, your account will be set up, regardless of the error messages.

Why is no one talking about this?

Oh wait, maybe they are, but I can’t hear them.

In recent months, my cellular service with AT&T has been draining straight down the tubes. Three out of five calls get dropped at least once —and no, I’m not exaggerating.

It’s not just the phone hanging up, either. I’ll be talking to someone and suddenly I get a busy signal. Excuse me, I was already connected!

It’s not my phone’s fault, either. My parents (using different phones than mine) have experienced even more problems: network access unavailable even when all bars are showing, inability to send text messages, and “Your call could not be completed as dialed. Please try again” messages.

It’s getting ridiculous!

I did a quick Google search to see if anyone is talking about this, and the only recent reference I found was an article where a guy went back to T-Mobile after experiencing too many dropped calls with AT&T.

I haven’t switched yet because my parents have AT&T, and so our calls are free. I also like the roll-over minutes because I’ve built up a buffer for those months when I run over the daytime minutes.

But it’s gotten so irritating that it may be time to start shopping and see who can get me a good deal on minutes. Then I can get out of this black hole.
