Update on the Suffolk blog denied press releases

Posted by Heidi on July 31st, 2008 · 2 Comments

Scott’s Morning Brew is keeping a detailed record of events surrounding the Suffolk vs. blog press release issue. Here’s a summary for my readers:

The blog can now get press releases by requesting them under FOIA and paying $15. The city is sending them on a CD.

Sunshine Review is also keeping tabs on the situation, and notes that Suffolk is not living up to any part of its stated communications policy/mission in regards to the Inside Suffolk Virginia blog.

We promote rapport and goodwill between the City and the community we serve through the interchange of ideas and the assessment of public opinion. In addition, we have the responsibility to seek public input and involvement in the affairs of City government and to establish effective two-way communications between the City and its constituents for everyone’s mutual benefit.

I don’t think I need to hash through that to point out the obvious contradictions between the City’s actions and words. (P.S. Is it okay if I snicker because the dimensions on Debbie George’s photo are making her head look squished?)

The Virginian-Pilot had a nice, albeit short, editorial on the topic this week.

In another article from The Virginian-Pilot: “Over the past 14 months several other high-level staff members have retired or left Suffolk for other jobs.” Hmm…

Maybe I’m just being persnickety, but I love this statement from Debbie George’s page on the city site:

..and creates several publications for the reading public.

What are they doing for the NON-reading public?

Nice catch, Scott. :) There are so many things wrong on just that webpage, it makes me shudder.
