Many a web designer has ranted or at least grumbled in irritation at folks who continue to use “click here” in order to link to another website. I’ll let that debate continue in other forums.
But I’ve found something even more annoying. Worse than “click here.” It’s called… “click below.” (shudder)
For some odd reason, these folks don’t even use “click here” to make a link. Instead, they tell you to “click below,” on what is usually a big image, to get where you want to go. Are they trying to make their site harder to use? Do I dare list some offenders who make my designer’s skin crawl?
Someone online (I forget the source, but I have a feeling it might be from Jacob Nielsen) once summarized my feelings about “click below” very well: if you have to tell people where to click, your design is seriously broken. In my own paraphrase, “please, please stop trying to be a web designer and hire someone who can make you look smarter.”
