A Dragon in Sheep’s Clothing

Thoughts from a web designer, writer and cat lover.

Vacation went swimmingly although it was busy. Got some good visiting time in with family and friends. This week I have to choose what photos to enter in a contest — my uncle and I agreed to both enter and see what happens.

This past week a co-worker got a new job and will be leaving on May 9. It’s been super to work with him, and I’m really going to miss walking to the coffee shop with him and chatting about blogs, diets. Mac vs. PC, Illustrator, and a dozen other interesting things. But I’m really happy he has a new job at a better employer and in a management role, to boot. His supervisor is definitely the worst of the bunch to be answerable to, on top of all the other drama from clients. *sigh*

My own supervisor is also looking for a new job. If she leaves, I may eventually have a mental breakdown. ;) Seriously though, I know I would be doing most of her tasks (except the management stuff) as well as mine, and judging from the way The Powers That Be have dragged their feet to hire a new writer (we’ve been without for, oh, 4 months now), I probably wouldn’t plan on relief arriving very soon.

Oh, and our office VP is also looking for a new job, ever so covertly, and she doesn’t know that most of her staff is aware of it. So we can probably give up hope of any support from her in terms of hiring people and managing projects.

Well, anyway, I have my own things to be getting on with. I am partnering with a guy in my town who wants to greatly expand a website he has had for several years. It was very profitable before he let it slide, and now he doesn’t have the time to take it to the level he wants by himself. So I have signed up as website designer and marketing idea person, in exchange for a percentage of lifetime profits.

I’m surprised at how excited I am about the project — mostly, I think, because it’s completely different from my day job, and every creative person knows how terrible it is to get into a rut. Unfortunately, most of us with day jobs end up in that rut. That’s why we rarely last more than 5 years, at least as grunts.

And yes, I’m deliberately being covert about this new project. I don’t want to advertise until the site and concept are ready to welcome all you lovely people. :)

To top it all off, I’m still considering getting my head shaved. Not bald :P but down to 1/4″ or so. I may actually get paid to do it, plus donate my hair to Locks of Love or an organization like that. We’ll see.

On a side note, I watched a sparrow eat a moth as I was writing this. First he tore the wings off, in that twitchy way small birds have. Then he ate the body, flinging moth fuzz all over. I’m sure you wanted to know that.
